Though this book rarely goes beneath the surface, it's hard not to like Bob Moore for his enthusiasm and corny humor in his road-trip travelogue along New Zealand's main highway. I read it as I was also traveling the country by car, oftentimes along SH1, so it became especially poignant for me, and it also served to point out more than a few roadside treasures that guidebooks had missed. It suffers a bit from a lack of story arc, an easy problem to have in travel writing, but it made me more comfortable leaving the book for weeks at a time and then picking it up again when about to embark on another section of Highway 1. I'm not sure it would hold much interest for those not planning to visit New Zealand, because his information/story is valuable in its specifics, not really in a larger insight into or illustration of the country. That may sound somewhat negative, but it isn't intended to be; I think of this as a colorful, first-person guidebook, and I'll have a warm spot in my heart for the author and his experiences of New Zealand for a while.
