I wanted to read this book for a couple of reasons: I have a 5 year old godson that loves when we read together, and my mother frequently asks for my help stocking her classroom library. So I jump at any chance to share a good book with my godcritter and pass on to my mom's eager students!

"The Secret Knock Club: The Dyno-Mite Dog Show" was hilarious, and I found myself shaking with laughter a few times while reading. I was NOT expecting that from a children's book (not because they can't be funny, but because I'm old as heck). These kids encounter a number of snafus and the main character's resolutions are humorously naive and realistic for her age.

I found it refreshing that the book has a female protagonist without being overly "girly." There are no princesses or dolls or fluffy plot points that play into gender stereotypes. Agnes reminds me of most of the girls in my mom's class. They have both girl and guy friends, like adventure as much as their male peers, and are just as opinionated and assertive as them. I think they would instantly identify with Agnes and connect with the story. The boys have plenty of engaging and well-developed male characters to keep their interest, as well.

The one thing I noted while reading is that some of Agnes' statements regarding other characters are snide and bordering on mean. I'm not sure if the story drives home the lesson of getting along with others enough for young readers. If they miss that moral of the story, they're potentially just left with some new snarky behaviors and the idea that rudeness is acceptable. I envision my mother desperately hiding this book from the kids that already struggle with behavior and can't afford this influence. And I can see myself reading this to my godgoblin and inserting "But that's not nice to say, okay?" and "But don't you ever do that, okay?" very often. He does have pretty remarkable discernment for his age, so I think he'd be fine!

In conclusion, I think the book is well-written and engaging enough to entertain even the most reluctant young readers. I would advise parents and teachers to read the book beforehand and decide for themselves if it's appropriate for their kiddos.

Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
